Learning reflections {Niagara Children Photographer)

Learning has been a big part of my life journey and I consider myself a life long learner.

My photography learning journey started early on.   I was about seven when I got my first camera, it was bright purple and was film.   My poor dog Toby was my primary target, I used to get dress him up in my cabbage patch clothes and take pictures.  This lasted for years!  I also remember taking pictures of my New Kids on the Block posters in my room, with hopes of telling my sister and friends that I met them in person.  lol the flash and glossy paper ruined that one!

I learned early on that pictures hold magical memories, one picture holds the magic to make you smile and cry at the same time.   At 14, when I lost my dad,  I found comfort looking at his pictures, remembering him, remembering his laugh and remembering the moment in that portrait.  I also took comfort in taking pictures of my friends and family, knowing that at any moment, it could all change, this moment in time does not last.

A whole new level of love for photography emerged when tiny little ones were born into our family.   My first nephew was so perfectly tiny, 6lbs of absolute perfection.  Such perfect little features, I could not get over how tiny his little hand and feet were!  He defined love at first sight for me!  I was obsessed, I had to captured it all, not missing a thing!   Love at first sight struck again four months later with the birth of my second nephew, he was just as perfect, just as tiny, but blonde!  One of my favourite pictures from him early on always reminds me of one of favourite moments ever– my sister looking down at him, crying with so much emotions, saying how can he be mine, he has no eyebrows?!  We are both have dark features… and bushy eyebrows lol

My third and most recent love at first sight was my sweet little niece.  She unexpectedly arrived into the world 6 weeks early, she was beautifully tiny and looked so much like my sister!  Being premature, her first days of life were in the hospital.  Looking back on the pictures captured remind again that pictures hold magical moments and the ability to make you cry and smile at the same time.

When my nephews figured out they could be on the move, I got my very first DSLR-  Canon Rebel.  I learned everything I could on my camera,  reading the user manual, taking many courses offered at Henry’s and practicing, practicing and practicing.  My digital photography love blossomed and still continues to blossom!

Learning about photography is something I love, it is my passion, it is a part of who I am.  It is something that I truly believe I will continue to learn about for a long time.   Today, I begin my third course in photography this year and continue my learning journey.  Learning has been a big part of my life journey and I consider myself a life long learner.  I believe there is always something to learn and I think this holds true for many things in life.

Daily Love- Week 2 | Niagara Falls Children Photographer

Week 2 of Project Life- 2013 Photo a day

Week 2 has come and gone! It has been one of those weeks that have been especially busy in all aspects and feels like nothing has gotten accomplished (ever have one of those?). Looking back on my photos this week, they show me despite this being a busy week, I was still able to check some items off the to do list and well, some items remained on that list so that enjoying the small little things in life like a quiet moment or a night out with friends were possible :)

Day 6- New Kitchen floors finished :)

Lisa Durocher Photography- St Catharines Children Photographer_0005.jpg

Day 7- Children imagination- I don’t know about you, but I have not seen many snow people this year, so when I saw three of them, I thought it was a perfect way to document a snowy January day (who knew a couple days later we would have 15′C weekend?). So I pulled over especially to capture these three, when I moved in closer, I noticed that it was a snow mama, deemed wild with a drinking problem (picture top right– sticker that says wild). Children’s imaginations make me smile.

Lisa Durocher Photography- St Catharines Children Photographer_0006.jpg

Day 8- Round and round again- Today was a difficult day– it was a busy day and creativity was running low. It was a day that I just wanted to relax and put my feet up and have a glass of wine. While thinking over a glass of wine, I looked down into the glass and well… day 8 picture ;)

Blinds leading the blind | Niagara Falls Children Photographer

Project Life Day 2-  Blinds leading the blind

I love sunny mornings! There is just something so refreshing and energizing when the sun shines :)

This morning while working away on the computer in my office, I glanced over at my bedroom and saw some great sun lines, I knew I had to play :)

Day 2 of Project Life is Blinds leading the blind-  Being so used to setting up and focusing my camera on a person/nature, I find self-portraits difficult with no one to focus on or to help vision the final shot.  I can only set up the picture as best as I can and predict where I think I’ll position myself, but when I get myself in front of the camera with the self timer blinking at me,  I feel blind. Thankfully, with the sun shinning bright through the blinds, the lines helped to lead the way ;)

Happy New Year everyone!  It seems so surreal that 2013 is here,  2012 flew by so quickly!

This year, I have decided to embark on a new exciting challenge called Project Life-  its a project to that involves capturing a photo a day for the next 365 days.    I would love by the end of this project to be able to create a nice photobook of all the wonderful images captured during the year.

Day 1- New beginnings-  Its all about hanging on to the wonderful memories in 2012 but also looking forward to the incredible things on the horizon for 2013 :)

To laugh or cry, top 10 recent keywords | St Catharines Children Photographer

This morning while having my coffee, I thought to check my Google Analytics for my website and blog.  Google analytics is a reporting platform for websites/blogs that allows you to see specific data on your website, such as how people found your website (i.e. facebook, twitter, google search), and if Google searched, you can also see which keywords they used to get to your website.

I find the keywords usually the most helpful,  it lets me know which keywords are useful that adds traffic to my site and sometimes what to include in my tags/keywords for a specific blog post.

This morning, at the sight of the top 10 most recent keywords found, I spat out my coffee.

google-keywords-lisa-durocher-photography

First, number 10, seriously?!?  At the sight of this I was in total disbelief and mixed emotions of crying or laughing.   I am still not sure whether to laugh or cry!

**Let me be extremely clear, that will never in a million years ever occur.

Thankfully Google Analytics also shows you how many visitors googled that and how long they stayed on their visit!

picture-5

Phew, one new visitor and did not stay on site (ie average visit duration).

Second thing that was apparent was that some people have troubles spelling my name.  I guess it’s not as easy to write or remember as I thought!

I am sharing this information to show you in light of weird/insanely random things in life,  you have to learn to laugh at it as opposed to cry ;)

Nurturing self-esteem in children as family and/or as a photographer

This past weekend I was reminded of how important a healthy self-image and positive self-esteem is for our little ones.  This is how valuable a child see themselves- how they think about themselves-  the likes and dislikes, how capable they think about themselves- I can and I can’t, all while feeling loved.  A healthy self-esteem is achieved when there is a good balance between feeling loved and feeling capable.

Children with low self-esteem/self-image

For children with low self esteem, they lack the confidence of “being capable” and are often hesitant about his or her own abilities.   They are often uncomfortable in new situations/activities, critical of him/herself and often have negative self-talk (e.g. calling oneself stupid, fat, ugly).  All of which makes it difficult for them to make friends.   It has been shown that low self esteem is related to adolescent/adult depression and risky behaviours.

How can we, as family, help build healthy self-esteem in little ones?

  • Be positive and encourage in every aspect
  • Model self-esteem- Kids love to copycat, show them how you are strong and confident
  • Squash the myths of imperfection
  • Encourage independence
  • Create and maintain a safe, loving home
  • Create fun and simple activities to do as a family
  • Let kids help with chores and compliment on the great job
  • Say I love you often
  • Say I love you more
  • Let them teach you something
  • Avoid negative comments about your body or criticizing your eating habits
  • Learn a new skill with them

How can we, as photographers, help a little one with low self-esteem feel comfortable in front of the camera?

  • Keep family near and having fun
  • Explain equipment in the studio and how it works
  • Compliment wardrobe/hair
  • Model self-esteem- be positive and confident
  • Let them see pictures on the back of the camera
  • Reinforce how great of job they are doing
  • Let them take pictures of you
  • Be positive and encouraging
  • Ask them for ideas on how they should pose or what props to use
  • Encourage questions/concerns

How do you encourage healthy self esteem in your little ones?   I would love to continuously add to this list.
