To laugh or cry, top 10 recent keywords | St Catharines Children Photographer

This morning while having my coffee, I thought to check my Google Analytics for my website and blog.  Google analytics is a reporting platform for websites/blogs that allows you to see specific data on your website, such as how people found your website (i.e. facebook, twitter, google search), and if Google searched, you can also see which keywords they used to get to your website.

I find the keywords usually the most helpful,  it lets me know which keywords are useful that adds traffic to my site and sometimes what to include in my tags/keywords for a specific blog post.

This morning, at the sight of the top 10 most recent keywords found, I spat out my coffee.

First, number 10, seriously?!?  At the sight of this I was in total disbelief and mixed emotions of crying or laughing.   I am still not sure whether to laugh or cry!

**Let me be extremely clear, that will never in a million years ever occur.

Thankfully Google Analytics also shows you how many visitors googled that and how long they stayed on their visit!

picture-5

Phew, one new visitor and did not stay on site (ie average visit duration).

Second thing that was apparent was that some people have troubles spelling my name.  I guess it’s not as easy to write or remember as I thought!

I am sharing this information to show you in light of weird/insanely random things in life,  you have to learn to laugh at it as opposed to cry ;)

Little Miss “A” {Children Session} | Niagara Child Photography

Little Miss “A”- St Catharines Children Session

Is there anything sweeter than a little tiny dancer?   Meet little Miss “A”– adorable ballerina, jazz dancer, and big fan of my vintage chair!  Each time we tried to take the chair out of the picture, she insisted to have it back in the photos.  She was so cute and such a ham for the camera!

This was my very first session in my new studio space and it was just so wonderful!   The lessons I learned from this session (a) I am not as good at measuring as I thought, 50×50 softbox really is big!,  (2) painter’s tape works for everything– including replacing my backdrop stand, and (3)  a white sectional couch is a magnet for little children and jumping! lol

This is what mom had to say about her session:  “Wow.. I’m so impressed Lisa! If only everyone knew how the session went…. Bravo my friend for capturing my little ballerina!!”

She knows how to make me blush ;)

It was so hard to narrow down which ones to show on her blog, but below are only SOME of my favourite pictures of this sweet tiny dancer.

Little girls dance their way into your heart,

whirling on the tips of angel wings,

scattering gold dust & kisses in our paths.

Beautiful “J” Family | St Catharines Family Photographer

Dearest J Family,

Thank you so much for allowing me to capture your beautiful family.  Almost one year ago (crazy!), I had the honour of capturing your little guy at 10 days old.  He was such a tiny little peanut with so much hair!  There were so many great moments, even a precious little smile!

Now, ten months later you have given me the honour again of capturing your gorgeous little family again,  the boys have gotten so big!  Such funny little guys you have,  I swear both of them are going to be astronauts!   They both loved being held or thrown in the air!

We had beautiful day together, the sun was shining and the fall leaves were at their prime!  I love all times of the year, but there is just something about those gorgeous fall colours combined with all the rustic barns and scenery.  Simply stunning!

The picture below of your little guy is one of my favourites, there is just something about those big baby blues!

Thanks again for playing around with some fun ideas with me!  This picture still has me laughing,  not sure if it’s dad’s face or the fact that mom couldn’t keep a straight face!  Even with messy hair- you’re gorgeous!

Little Miss Diva {Children Session} – Niagara Falls Child Baby Photographer

Ever since she was five minutes old, I have been photographing my sweet niece, Little Miss Diva.   Throughout her first year with a personal project of mine and my sister’s,  we capture Little Miss Diva’s growth every month.  It always amazes me to see how much growing a little one does in the span of a couple of months!  Life truly is incredible!

Now at 19 months, she has grown even more!  New to walking and not much of a talker (yet!), she loves to observe everything.  Sometimes she can be seen as a serious little lady or at other times, very silly!   I love all the pictures below as it captures exactly as she is,  a mix of silly and serious!

Enjoy!

Moms, Dads, when was the last time… – St Catharines Family Photographer

Moms & Dads, when was the last time you had your picture taken together?

“Alright, mom & dad, it’s your turn now,  let’s get a picture of the two of you” … the most common phrase that follows this is “we haven’t had a picture taken of us since our wedding day”.

I remember being surprised the first time I heard someone say this to me during a family session. Turns out, this is very common among families.  Most often, they have not had a professional photo taken of them since their wedding day.

st-catharines-photographer

Weddings are probably the most photographed day of our lives.  Everyone is dressed up in their most formal attire, beautiful venue, and surrounded by family and friends.  It is a day that we all want to remember and never forget.

First anniversary comes and go, second… third… our families growing… and now the thought of family pictures comes to mind.  Most certainly we want to capture those little ones before they grow even more and change, but what about you, Mom? Dad?  How much have you’ve changed?

niagara-family-photography

We all change year in and out.. yes I realize the changes of getting older are quite different than our children, but you have changed in the most beautiful way— you went from boyfriend/girlfriend, to husband/wife, to mom/dad… TOGETHER!

niagara-family-photographer

Your love for each other has evolved in the most incredible way.   There is no reason to be turning away and running as fast as you can in the other direction or cringe at the thought of you two getting a professional photo of the two of you.  You are BEAUTIFUL,  have a GORGEOUS family together, and should CELEBRATE your love for each other.

Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory ~ unknown

Halloween Dilemma- Just not enough light!

This Halloween, my house saw the most trick or treaters ever!   Over 150 kids came ringing on my doorstep to get their share of yummy candies,  I saw my share of princesses, pumpkins, superheros, goblins, and even a little “Phantom of the Opera”.  That little guy was about 3-4 years old and knew how to sing, he sang to us!  Melt my heart he was so sweet!

Three of my sweetest little loves came to visit,  they were a knight and shinning armor, a fireman and a little skunk.  Of course, I had my big camera ready to take pictures,  positioned my little fireman and skunk on the stairs and pushed the button… and nothing…  I find my new camera to be a little finicky when it comes to low light situations and finding a focus point.  With a dslr, the best thing you can do in low light situations is to open up your aperture and/or bump up your ISO.  So I bumped up my ISO to the highest and had the widest aperture, but it just was not fast enough to still the motion of a child.  He was just so squirmy because of all the chocolates ;)  Below is a picture of my sweet nephew, it is the perfect example of what happens when a dslr does not have enough light for a fast shutter speed.

halloween2-st-catharines

He is not as focus as he could have been if (a) weather wasn’t as rainy and dreary (ie more light), (b) he was sitting closer to the lamp (ie more light), or (c) if he was sleeping (ie no movement).    Are you seeing the relationship between shutter speed, light, and aperture?

This little stinker was closer to the lamp which allowed just enough light to capture this sweet picture.  Do you notice a difference in the focus/sharpness of the photos?

halloween3-st-catharines

I bet you can see a real difference with my little knight and shinning armor, he was directly under the lamp (ie more light, allowing for faster shutter speed which stops blurriness)

halloween1-st-catharines

I wondered after all this,  would I have been better off taking pictures with my phone or a small point and shoot?  Has my big camera failed me?   No matter what device I would have chosen, I would have needed the most possible light to optimize the quality of my photos.   So please, when capturing sweet moments in your life and you see some of the photos coming out blurry,  look around you and find more ways to add light .     Such pictures are special and irreplaceable.

Dearest “Z” Family | Hamilton Children Photography

Dearest Sweet “Z” Family,

It is unbelievable to think we have known each other since undergrad (crazy that it’s to think that’s over five years ago!).  I loved attending classes with you, getting to know you, and debating about grad schools.   While we went to grad schools in different provinces, we still kept in touch.  I remember flying home to attend your wedding, which is still among the most unique and beautiful weddings I have ever been to!  It was Greek and Serbian in the most beautiful church with magnificent ceilings I have ever seen… maybe the Hamilton version of the 16th chapel? ;)

Years pass by, we graduated from grad schools and move on to careers, you had some amazing stories about the students in your classes, always so much love and happiness when you described them.  I knew that one day, your little ones would be so lucky to have a mama like you.  That day came last fall to the most gorgeous little boy, who looks exactly like daddy!  It has been so wonderful to watch you as a mother, you are so gentle, so loving, so wonderful with him.   He sure is one lucky little guy!

I love our visits we have monthly,  I love that we can chat like we have seen each other every day! I love watching you as a mother, I love watching your little guy grow, and I absolutely love having you as a friend.  It was a total honour to capture your family,  you are such an amazingly photogenic family!

Thank you so much for being an amazing friend and for allowing me to capture your family’s sweetness! I love every single photo!

Love always,

Lisa

In 10 minutes, we help eachother | St Catharines Family Photography

I’ll admit it, I’m a survey and statistics geek!

I was reminded yet again why I love surveys so much!   If you would have known me in University,  this would be of no surprise!  I loved creating surveys, collecting and tabulating responses to analyze them (I’m a geek, I love statistics), and reaching meaningful conclusions.   It is no surprise that I would create a survey to get to know you prior to our sessions together and collect some valuable information.

Of course, this creates both a little work on both our ends, I understand that it is time consuming and finding time to do anything is so hard with a busy life.  But the information that you provide me in 10 minutes is truly helpful and helps me to get to know you better, what interests your family have, what activities you do together, as well as getting to know your children personalities.  In knowing such information, it provides me with an overall picture of your family, the type of photos you will most cherish,  and what moments you would love for me to capture.

But did you know that it also helps me prepare what I should bring in my bag (i.e. what equipment to bring)?

Not only does the survey provide me with valuable information on your family, different ideas for themes, locations that would suit your family/children, but also provides insight into the type of equipment that would be most useful for your session. For example, if you tell me your child is shy,  I would know that your child would need time to warm up to me and the camera, it probably would be best to start with the session with the parents close by,  that I would need to be less intrusive, meaning I would need to be further away in the beginning and that I should pack/bring a longer lens.  Or if you tell me your child is a ball of energy,  I know that s/he would be less likely to notice the camera, that a short lens (ie shorter distance) would be ok with them, that I would need a faster than usual shutter speed and to keep the sugar treats to minimal (lol).

In the short 10 minutes it takes to complete the survey, a lot of helpful information is given.  I just wanted to say thank you, I much appreciate the time you take to complete it, and I especially love reading them and getting to know you and your family!

Not your typical love letter | St Catharines Graffiti Alley | Niagara Fitness

A blog post by my sister Danielle to her beautiful fitness mama friends (who may I add have lost over 100 lbs together!):

Dear ladies,

I thought I would take the time to write you a little letter to express how amazingly proud I am to call you my friends.  This past year has been a huge year of self discovery for me.  I have learned how to take care of me.  I have learned how to exercise, eat right and take time for me.  It has been life changing. Not in the way having my kids has been, but in many ways just as important.  Everything I have become this year (healthy, active) defines me, like the words mommy and teacher do.

st-catharines-photographer3

What has been most amazing about this year is that I have undergone these changes next to some of the most inspirational women I know.  You are mothers, you are wives, you are professionals, and you are BUSY.  Yet in this crazy life, you have found the time and the energy to become healthier versions of you.  I have watched each of you shrink, yet at the same time grow.  This year has seen amazing amounts of pounds shed (we are talking over 100) and just as many inches! But, I have seen self esteems grow, personality’s flourish, goals attained.  There is nothing more inspirational then standing (forget that!), sweating beside you.

st-catharines-photographer2

This is why I wanted to do this fitness shoot with all of you.  I was hoping that through the lens of my sister you could see a little glimpse of how amazing you are.  How strong you have become. Women can be so hard on themselves, so I wanted you to have these pictures as reminders of how far you have come.  You are SEXY! Each one of you! Look at these pictures and be proud of all that you have achieved.

st-catharines-photography1

I look forward to many more workouts with you ladies.  I’m so honoured to have you as friends.  I love you all to bits, all your shrinking bits!

Your friend in fitness,

Danielle

Automaticity of life… bam!

We live our lives day in and day out, moving from one moment to other, sometimes with a lot of thought, sometimes without a thought in the world.  As complex beings, we have the ability to do things without occupying the mind with the low-level of details required,  where certain things become an automatic response pattern or habit.  The word for this is automaticity, where some aspects of learning, repetition, and practice of something have allowed us to move through life quicker.   Good examples of this are walking, speaking, riding a bike,   it is something learned with much repetition and practice. We can do it with our eyes closed and without much thought.

Driving your car, we drive to work, drive the kids to school, drive to workout, drive somewhere.  Most of us drive every day, sometimes without knowing how we got to point A to point B (scary thought) until BAM… something happens,  run over the neighbours cat, stop to car because of something…  and our automaticity of driving our car is threatened, it is no longer a habit,  that “bam” moment has you thinking about every move you take.  It is no longer automatic,  you take more time to think about what you are doing.

Sometimes we have “BAM” life moments, something to remind you that this little life of ours that we’ve given really is short, precious and is most certainly supposed to be lived to its fullest.  It is not the first time I’ve had a BAM moment personally, but my most recent one was this afternoon while watching this video.  The video is of a mom battling stage 4 ovarian cancer with two young children,  it is a beautifully made video that will leave you either crying or with shivers, but most certainly with an appreciation all that is good and everyone every single day (Carpe diem!).

st-catharines-children-photographer_0

Maybe BAM moments happen to us just when we need to take a look at our lives,  remind us to slow it down, and to appreciate everything and everyone.    Instead of moving through life in an automatic fashion, we take the time to think about every move we make and to appreciate what we are doing. Have you’ve recently had a “BAM” life moment?

Please take the time to enjoy life, slow it down, enjoy every moment (even the hard ones, each one teaches us something), and hug your loved ones and let them know you appreciate them.

If you haven’t seen it yet, please take the time to watch the video,  say a prayer (if you pray) and send some positive energy and thought to this mom and to many amazing people you may know directly/indirectly battling something hard in their lives.
