Dearest Clumsy Girl | Niagara Baby & Children Photographer | Birthday

Dear Sweet Sweet Sweet Clumsy Girl,

I had the privilege of capturing your second birthday,  you have grown so much since I last saw you and yet still the funniest little girl!   You really are just a big ball of energy loving life!

When I asked your mama to tell me about your interests,  she told me about every little thing you love to do (she really could talk about you all day, that’s how much she loves you!).   Boy was she exactly right on everything you love to do!  I found out that you love to colour and play with sidewalk chalk. go to parks and play on the swings, slides, and most definitely climbing!  Heights is no fear of yours!  You also love blowing bubbles and catching bubbles,  your mama describes it the best “Blowing bubbles is a daily must in our house”, good thing they bought you a new bubble blowing machine (too bad they forgot it for our session lol)!   You also enjoy a good book, you love to “read” to yourself and your little friends, it is the absolutely cutest little thing,  maybe you’ll be a teacher when you’re older?  I absolutely loved capturing all your favourite things!

Please tell your parents that I enjoyed very much the session we shared together, it is always a wonderful time seeing them and I look forward to seeing you soon and hearing about your new clumsy stories :)

Lisa :)

Dearest “R” Family | St Catharines Niagara Children Photography

To the Sweet “R” Family,

Can you believe that one year has already past since we first met?  It has been such a pleasurable year capturing many of your family’s most cherished moments.  From our very first meet last year in June,  you both resonated with so much kindness and friendliness that made for a wonderful experience, filled with many fun and silly moments!  Never have I had such a great reaction and genuine laughs from asking someone to stick out their tongues at me ;)

With the arrival of your beautiful daughter, my sister and I were welcomed into your lovely home like we were old friends.  You absolutely had no problems with us bringing a little assistant for the day [my niece, 3 months old] when we couldn’t find a sitter.  I remember you [dad] holding Miss Diva [my niece] and trying to picture the day when your little one would be that big.  Before we knew it, 6 months had already passed and it was time for Smiley Miss “S” to get her 6 months pictures done.   Such a transformation going from a little wee one to social and happy little one.   She was such a beautiful mix of you both.

Little Miss “S” first birthday came just as quick and it was so exciting to see how much she had grown in the past six month.  With her full head of blonde hair and looking more like Daddy,  she was just as happy and smiley as she was on her last session.   We definitely came well prepared for our session,  with the headbands and rompers I had brought and all the beautiful little outfits, shoes, and headbands you brought, needless to say, we were not short on fashion items!!  Below [and the one above] are some of my favourite images from our session together!

It has always been a pleasure to seeing you both and little Miss “S” and it has been such a memorable year.   Thank you so much for everything!

I always look forward to the next time I see you all!!

Lisa :)

Oh, my goodness, how can this be? You’re turning three!

Three years ago today, my family welcomed a sweet little man into our lives, my sister had her first little one. He was born a little peanut and surprised us all with his full head of blonde hair.  Never had I ever imagined experiencing love at first sight,  let alone twice in one year.   Both my nephews will always hold a very special place in my heart, they have defined what it feels like to fall in love in its purest and most sincerest form.

My sister embraced motherhood so naturally,  so gentle, so understanding, so nurturing.   This was not a surprise to me ,  I always knew she would be a great mother,  she has always been a great big sister to me (well maybe with some slight exceptions during our adolescent years lol).   Watching her as mom is amazing,  I see many of our family values and traditions in her, mixed in with her little family values and traditions, and many of her own.   I have learned in her the mother our mom had raised us to be and the mother I want to be.

Over the past three years, I have watched her raise a loving, sweet, silly, and busy little guy.  He is still the tinniest of peanuts but is always full of beans and giggles.   He is a great big brother and loves his sister very much, they are still learning the meaning of sharing.   He loves to takes baths and often even refuses to come out even when the drain has emptied all the water.   He hates timeouts and is learning how to avoid them.  He loves to giggle and still has the funniest little laugh.

He loves looking out the big living room window and watch the world pass by.   He loves to water nana’s garden with the hose and is learning that the hose is not to water nana.  He loves to stay busy and play with his friends.   He is still learning to love soccer. He loves to play and “bah” Clyde and is learning that the cat is to be treated different than a dog.  He loves ice cream.  He loves to take pictures with his mom’s iphone and loves to look at pictures.  He loves to have books read to him.  He loves everything about Woody and Toy Story.

Without a doubt, this little guy has brought so much unimaginable joy and laughter to my life.  He has grown into a silly, thoughtful, loving, and easy going little boy.   I have enjoyed watching him grow these past three years and I absolutely cannot wait to watch him grow for many more years.

Bonne Fete mon Minou! Matante t’aime bien!

Dearest “W” Family | St Catharines/Niagara Children Photography

Dearest “W” Family,

I cannot even begin to express what an honour and pleasure it has been to capture three special moments for your family this past year.  Thank you so much for letting me be part of such milestones for your family.

A little over a year ago,  we met when you were expecting your second son.   The session was held in a beautiful secret garden that you suggested after we found out a race was occurring at our original location.   To this date, this secret garden always reminds me of your maternity session.   My absolutely favourite pictures from this session was the one of you [mom] on the stairs caressing your belly.   This picture is just amazing in black and white!

st-catharines-niagara-maternity-1

Shortly after our session,  I had the pleasure of meeting your little guy.   I remember when you first arrived,  Baby “C” was bright eyed and alert.   It was so cute because the only way we could manage to get him to sleep was in a little basket.   Actually, I now use that little basket as a flower basket filled with pansies on my window seal  :)

st-catharines-niagara-newborn-1

First birthdays are such a huge milestone and I was very excited to be part of it and see just how much your little guy changed!  I was beyond ecstatic when you mentioned you had a retro spin top that he loves to play with!   These pictures turned out so cute, not to mention the most adorable little enssemble that you picked out!   One of my favourite pictures was being able to catch the spin top spinning/moving while Baby “C” was playing with this.  Being able to capture this required a slow shutter speed to catch movement (i.e. spinning of spin top) while usually with kids you keep a fast shutter speed to keep up with them.  Luckily, Baby “C” kept still enough while playing to be able to capture both and I couldn’t of been happier!

st-catharines-niagara-first-birthday-4

Always a favourite of mine is catching little ones in movement, I love how their curiosity with the world, well in these moments its usually my lens and their reflection.   I love his innocent face in this picture which highlights his beautiful big blue eyes!

st-catharines-niagara-first-birthday-3

I was happy to hear right from the start that you were looking to incorporate some vintage/retro props into your session.  It gave me the chance to use my favourite vintage chair that worked so well with our location and his little enssemble!    It’s just unbelievable the moments you can catch when you let a little one discover things on their own.   Such as the picture below with playing with the balloon.   Similar to your maternity image, this image just suited black and white!

st-catharines-niagara-first-birthday-2

Cake smashes are always a fun part of first birthday session, I love how little ones dig into their cakes, get all messy, and experience the “sweetness” of life!   You did such a great job on making his little cake and I love the little sign that you made to include with some of the photos that said “made with love”.   Such a wonderful personal touch to your session that will be forever cherished by your little guy!

I can’t thank you enough for allowing me to capture some sweet moments for your family.   I hope you love your photos as much as I have loved capturing such special moments for you and your family!

Dearest “K” Family | St Catharines/Niagara Children Photography

As mentioned in my previous post [click here to read], writing has never come naturally to me.   A new way that I’m hoping to overcome my writing anxiety/block is (1) with the new perspective of “I can”, forgetting the “I can’t” and keeping up an optimistic perspective, and (2) making each blog post a personal letter to the families I shared a session with, sharing with you what pictures made me smile, laugh, and which ones really touched my heart, and most importantly, why.

Please read below a letter to beautiful Family “K” (the only full name ever shared over the internet is my own).

Dearest Sweet “K” Family,

From our first couple of email exchanges, I knew that your session was going to be a fun filled and exciting session.  Boy was I right!  Not only when I met you in person, were you a very nice and easy going family, our session was filled with many laughs, smiles, and one embarrassing moment on my behalf ;)  While I knew that we would have no problems talking away, never did I foresee our conversations leading me to lock my keys in my trunk with all of the props.  Thankfully, it was the end of our session,  I have never been so embarrassed!   I am forever grateful for your helping hand and generosity in driving me back home to get my extra set of keys and driving me back to my car.  Such acts of kindness and going out of your way, mean so much to me.

I was unbelievably excited to get home and start working away on your session.  You are one amazingly photogenic family!   One of the very first photos captured was when you [mom] were trying to make “Babe J” smile.  It is such a beautiful and natural moment captured, love your smile and the special moment shared.

st-catharines-niagara-family-photographer1

I was so happy to be able to change my lens fast enough to capture this special moment shared between you.   Again, it is such a natural special moment shared, and I absolutely love how everyone is focusing in the same direction as you [mom] gently stroke “babe J” forehead.

st-catharines-niagara-family-photographer3

While it was time for “Babe J” feeding break,  I had the opportunity of taking dad and big sister “N” aside for some father-daughter pictures.  Boy I am I glad that I did!  While I captured many shared moments between the two of you,  I have to say my two favourite pictures was one captured when walking to the little secret garden (love being sneaky and catching some photos when you least expected it) and the other one a beautiful posed photo– I just absolutely love everything about this photo- the light, the background, the smiles, the sparkling eyes.

st-catharines-niagara-family-photographer6 st-catharines-niagara-family-photographer7

One  special request for your family session was to capture the small details of “babe J” as you felt he was changing so quickly.   It is incredible how a little one can change all within one year!   The details of his eyes, nose, mouth, and little hands/feet were captured.  I absolutely adore the pictures of his feet with your [mom] hands and his little hand with your [dad] hand.   To me, it really puts into perspective how tiny a little one is from the beginning and how much growing they do.

st-catharines-niagara-family-photographer5

I also adored this family picture of your hands,  your unity and your togetherness.

st-catharines-niagara-family-photographer4

Last, but definitely not least is one of your beautiful family photos, one of my favourites.  This photo really makes me smile because it reminds me of the laughs we shared between frames while trying to get everyone to look in the same directions and just how wonderful it represents your family– beautiful, friendly, and easy-going.

st-catharines-niagara-family-photographer2

The morning we spent together was a lot of fun and I will be forever grateful for your helping hand and kindness.  From the very start till now as I write this post, I have smiled the whole time.   I hope you love your photos as much I have enjoyed capturing such special moments for you and your family!

Thank you again for everything!

Lisa

Writing anxiety… writing block… I got ‘em both!

I’m really jealous of natural born bloggers, you know, the ones that can write a blog in about 10 minutes and inspire the world.  For me, writing has never come naturally, I was one of those essay writers in high school/university that would need to start the second the topic was given and would struggle until the very last minute.   I had a friend in University,  she had the ability to wait until the very last night before a paper was due, pulled an “all-nighter” and managed to have an A+ paper ready the next morning in time for class.  I still don’t know how she did it!

Sometimes (alright, all the time) with my blog is not a matter of what to say, but how to say it or rather, how to write it.  When I start a blog post, the white space and the flicking little line waiting for me to input some text makes me freeze.  Never fails! I.. just… get… nervous!

As mentioned, writing has never come naturally to me, and to add the possibility that others may be reading my blog post, adds an instant ball of anxiety in my stomach.  Maybe I’m afraid of disappointing you?   Maybe I’m silly?  All I want from my blog is to be able to share with others how special your sessions are to me and how much it is an honour to capture special moments for you.  I spend countless hours preparing for a session, writing emails, getting to know you,  getting to know what you would like in your session,  spend time during the session capturing moments,  come home and upload the pictures to my computer, edit the pictures (and re-live moments shared all over again!), share some sneak peaks, open your online gallery and write some more emails.   So needless to say, it’s definitely not about what to say in a blog,  I find that I know you and your family well by the time you have your prints in your hands, not to mention, some of you I have captured 2,3 or even 5 times!   It comes down to when I have to write a post and share how your pictures make me smile, laugh, or even reminiscence of a special moment… I… just… can’t.. do…it!!

Word such as “I can’t” make my personal trainer cringe, such words are not allowed in the gym.  So why do I allow them in other aspects of my life, such as writing?  I’m going to try some new perspectives, 1) No more “I can’t!” .  Only “I can” will be coming from this lady; and 2) I am going to write personal letters to the families I shared sessions with,  I’m going to share with you which pictures made me smile, which ones made me laugh, and which ones really touched my heart,  and most importantly why.   Pictures of special moments captured during your sessions will help me overcome this writing anxiety/block!  I may never be a natural born blogger, but I WILL be a learned blogger!

The love-hate relationship with 8×10

All digital SLR cameras nowadays have a digital frame in a 2:3 ratio {I know what you’re thinking, so what?}.  But when we consider the mathematics of it all,if we double the 2:3 ratio, we get an 4×6 or if we triple, we get an 8×12.   This means, when a photo is ordered in a 4×6 or 8×12 print, there is no crop issue.  The problem arises however when we have to crop an 8×12 print (i.e. 2:3 ratio) to an 8×10 (i.e. 4:5 ratio), we will have to cut 2″ off the photo.

lisa-durocher-photography-4x6-8x10

In most cases,  there is room to crop an image that won’t cut into important elements of the photo.   However, there are times when the image is “tight” or close up and the 8×10 crop will cut off something of importance.   A personal example of a “tight” image is a picture of my niece in a baptism gown my sister and I wore as babes, it had been dry cleaned after the last time it was used {not telling how many years!} and was stored in a box until one of us had a little girl.   Needless to say, this gown is of importance to us and to capture my beautiful niece in it, was priceless.   If printed as an 8×10,  we would lose 2″ of detail in the gown.

lisa-durocher-photography2-4x6-8x10

Again, in most cases, there is more than enough room to crop an image that won’t cut into any important elements of the photo.  However, there are times when a photo is “tight” or close up and those 2″ can make a world of difference.   The point of this blog post is not to scare you away from 8×10 prints,  but more to take into consideration that a crop will need to be made when ordering that size.  Please consider the next time you order an 8×10 print either as you see it in your private gallery I open for you or when ordering a personal photo,  2″ of that photo will be cropped.

Sisterly love {Children} | St Catharines/Niagara Photography

I have two beautiful sisters to introduce you today on the blog,  meet Little Miss K and Little Miss C.   This energetic duo share birthdays within days of eachother,  Little Miss K turned 3 and Little Miss C turned 1.   What better way to celebrate a birthday together than having pictures taken and smashing their very own cakes!

Boy is their daddy gonna have trouble with these beauties when they’re older,  these two have the most amazing eyes and eyelashes I have ever seen, not to mention they were all full of giggles, laughter, and all about having fun!   Within our time together, we went through every tutu and almost every props,  these gorgeous ladies know their fashion ;)

Below are some of my favourite pictures from our session together!  Hope you enjoy!

Thank you so much for allowing me to capture your beauties, always a pleasure!

Hospital Roomies {First Birthday} | St Catharines/Niagara Children Photography

It is so hard to believe that one year has already past!  I first met Little Mr “L” and his gorgeous mama in the hospital when he was first born.  This little sweetheart was born just one day before my niece and were hospital roomies,  he was such a little peanut!

Throughout this year, I have had the pleasure of capturing him as a newborn (17 days young!), at 6 months, and for his first birthday.   It is such a wonderful experience to capture the growth of a little one during their first year, get to know their little personalities and their families.  I just love that after our whole year together that I am able to call this beautiful family my friends!

Below are some of my favourite captured moments from little baby “L” first birthday

I knew your mama when… {First Birthday} | St Catharines/Niagara Children Photography

You know, my aim of blogging weekly is turning out to be a little tougher than I originally thought.  But here I am, dusting off this pretty little blog that took myself and a friend a long time to put together, to give it some much deserved love.   I can’t think of a better session that the one I’m sharing with you tonight,  meet sweet little baby “G” and his gorgeous brown eyes and big smiles!   This little sweetie is the youngest of three and absolutely loved having his mama’s undivided attention during the session,  as you can tell by his giant happy smile!

lisa-durocher-photography-first-birthday3

I absolutely loved this session, not only for for this cute little guy, but also because I got to spend some time with his mama!  I used to work with his mama when I was in high school at a sub shop and it was some of the best of times, especially working late nights (3am on weekends, can you believe it!?!) with this little guy’s fun filled mama!

I feel so guilty sometimes,  I see the most gorgeous designed cakes by many talented people, and I ask babes to smash it!
